Pile Details

Information about the fire pile(s) to be burnt.

For a single property:

  • No more than one Approval to Burn will be considered valid at a time (ie multiple applications covering an overlapping time period are not permitted).

  • The maximum number of piles that may be approved for burning at any one time is three.

  • Burning activities relating to a maximum of four approvals may be completed in a calendar year.

The NSW RFS may provide permission to remove greater amounts of vegetation for the purpose of bushfire mitigation through a Bushfire Hazard Reduction Certificate. Contact the NSW RFS Hornsby Ku-ring-gai District Office on telephone 9883 2000 to discuss.

The questions below confirm that contents of the pile(s) comply with the relevant legislation, such as the Protection of Environment Operations (Clean Air) Regulation 2010.

If constructed on flat ground, each pile must have a clear space of 4.5m. If constructed on sloping ground a clear space of 20m upslope and 4.5m in all other directions. Material to be burnt must be able to be burnt and extinguished within the specified time frame. Large branches, tree trunks and root balls can smoulder for days and sometimes weeks.
